NWOT 1980's Aquascutum Broadgate Raincoat - Size 40/50R NEW

Description

When we're talking about raincoat and outerwear, there are only two names that stood the test of time: Burberry or Aquascutum. You're either fashion forward or traditional. Rebel or classic. Both claimed ownership of the trench coat, but Aquascutum was the reference for raincoats until the 1980's. Aquascutum (watershield in Latin) was the first to create a waterproof wool that could resist the infamously bad english weather in 1853. And while Burberry was created 3 years after with a similar, bulkier, product, Aquascutum was the garment of choice for the aristocracy, earning a royal warrant by the-then Prince of Wales, and future King Edward VII, at the end of the 19th century. It was at this time that Aquascutum created its famous checked lining, as an hommage to the Prince of Wales. It was also the official coat of the army, especially high-ranking officers, during both world war. From the 1950's to the 1980's, it was a staple for Hollywood celebrities, politicians and royals all over Europe. Among their customers, we have Prince Rainier of Monaco, Sir Winston Churchill, Humphrey Bogart (the famous one in Casablanca), Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Michael Caine (in Get Carter) and Cary Grant. The later one was the main promoter of their Broadgate model, both in films and in real life. It remained their best seller. Aquascutum was family-owned until the early 1990's. After that, it changed ownership multiple times, with decreasing quality and confusing trends. It declared bankruptcy again in 2020 and has seized distribution. The model I'm proposing is their classic Broadgate. Made in England in the early 1980's, it has a similar cut to the original one from the 1950's, without being as long. It is brand new, never worn, and was stored all this time. The only thing missing is the original price tag. It is the real Aquascutum, with a 100% cotton lining, beautiful turn-up cuffs on sleeves, raglan shoulder, hidden buttons, and their unique rounded collar, with a single button to close it ("col gorge de pigeon" in French). It is impossible to find such model in pristine condition, even in retail. It is best fitted for someone with a 40UK / 50FR size, around 1m75 to 1m85. The cut is roomy in order to wear it with a suit or heavy knitwear. It is the perfect garment in the mid-season, especially in October and March during rainy days. Here are the measurements Shoulders: 45cm Sleeve length: 64cm (with 6cm of fabric to let out) Chest: 52cm Waist at button: 56cm Coat length: 110cm (collar included) Collar length: 8cm
